A window to the Earth's past
Travel back in time to the Magdalena Peninsula, traveling 120 million years ago on an interpreted route, and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Costa Quebrada Geopark. This itinerary takes us on a simple walk to discover the Magdalena Peninsula, through its landscape, geological, and historical-artistic elements. We travel to the Cretaceous and to the reefs that formed the rocks we walk on. Rocks formed in warm environments that allow us to imagine what the Earth and Cantabria were like in the geological past.We will learn about the origin and evolution of the Bay of Santander and the changes in the El Puntal sandbar. We will also learn about the changes in vegetation and the transformation of the relict holm oak forest located on the limestone, which, like treasures, hold the fossilized remains of the ancient reef. Fossils and fossil sections are visible in the rocks that we often find in the stone used in the city's sidewalks or as ornamental stone.Rocks that are sometimes fractured and other times eroded, giving rise to the karst morphology characteristic of limestone. And let's not forget to deepen our knowledge of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network located in the area you can enjoy from Santander in the Costa Quebrada Geopark.
