A Geology for Everyone

Discover the Costa Quebrada Geopark on an interpreted walk through a unique geological and cultural setting. A simple walking route to familiarize yourself with the geology and evolution of the northern coast of Santander.This interpreted route takes place near the Coastal Interpretation Center and around the La Maruca estuary and the San Pedro del Mar estuary. Here we find intertidal pools in depressions on the rock that are home to a wide variety of organisms. Shapes in the rock slabs reveal a type of erosion associated with the dynamics of waves and currents. Erosion that changes depending on the type of rock. Some of these caves contain fossil tracks and ducts produced by organisms that inhabited the mud of the seabed some 45-50 million years ago.You'll learn about marine marshes and the importance of tide mills. We'll see the soft rock strata that slope toward the sea from Punta del Ser and their relationship with the San Román-Santillana syncline, a folded structure that demonstrates the magnitude of the planet's forces, which on its northern flank tilt the rock strata vertically.A place linked to its people and life at sea, with a tragic episode that we'll also learn about and that was included in the novel "Sotileza" by José María de Pereda. You'll learn to read boat registrations and learn more about traditional fishing methods and species.
