Dry Wall Landscape Route

The "Dry-wall Landscape Route" delves into the surrounding geology, biology, and natural and cultural heritage. We bring together knowledge and outreach in this unique cultural landscape of the Costa Quebrada Geopark. A guided walk takes us along ancient paths to the confluence of the Cantabrian Sea. This route runs along one of the best preserved rural areas, next to the steepest cliffs in Santander, where some of the municipality's rarest birds breed: the European shag and the red-billed chough. On the cliffs, bordering them, we discover ecosystems related to hay meadows and cliff heaths. The coastal route allows us to enjoy and discover landscapes of great beauty, with homogeneous geological and ecological characteristics. A coastline of limestone and dolomites formed between 65 and 40 million years ago, rich in fossil remains, and where fracture systems play an important role in explaining the coastal forms we find. This is also the foundation of the architectural heritage, the Panteón del Inglés, whose construction is linked to a beautiful story of friendship that also allows us to discover what communication was like with the ships that entered Santander. All of this is set against a karst landscape of rounded rocks and distinctive shapes that seem straight out of a fairy tale.Without forgetting that we are in a unique and singular rural cultural landscape, divided by dry-stone walls (morios). We see the geology in the walls as we walk along rural paths along the northern coast of Santander, such as "Mato Blanco."During the tour, we will taste some of the cheeses made in the surroundings of the Costa Quebrada Geopark to highlight local produce.
