Almería, Castelló de la Plana, Mataró and Santa Coloma de Gramenet are now Active Running Cities recognised by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation. How did they achieve this? Almería
Why it is an Active Running City:This Andalusian city with its wonderful natural landscapes is committed to green spaces and routes along the coast to prioritise physical exercise and promote sustainable mobility. In addition to combining sport and biodiversity, the aim is to reduce the use of vehicles in favour of healthier walking and cycling alternatives.Tourism:It boasts moderate all-year-round temperatures and a coastline full of almost secluded, relaxing beaches with calm water. You will be able to admire an extensive artistic heritage, with iconic monuments such as the Alcazaba and, just 30 kilometres away, the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve, an authentic oasis of tranquillity declared a Biosphere Reserve, to explore at your own pace. In short, Almería invites you to discover the city through movement.Highlighted event:Among the big events in the city's running calendar are the Costa de Almería Marathon, which is held at the end of November and includes both the ultra marathon and the trail, and La Desértica, which starts in Almería city and finishes in Roquetas de Mar, in October.

Castellón de la Plana
Why it is an Active Running City:Castellón combines modern infrastructures with an inclusive and accessible urban design. The city is committed to running and walking as activities for the whole family, with numerous events throughout the year to consolidate a large community of runners and hikers.Tourism:With its magnificent beaches around the fishing district of Grao, Castelló de la Plana is the epicentre of the Costa de Azahar. Thanks to its mild climate, a visit to this destination is pleasant at any time of year. El Fadrí, the 17th century bell tower located next to the Procathedral of Santa María, is one of the symbols of the city’s old quarters, together with other monuments such as the Basilica of Lledó, the ruins of the Alçaments tower, or the Hemp Exchange. Castellón is also a reference point on the ceramics route, so you can make the most of the opportunity to take a guided tour. The fun Festival of La Magdalena, recognised as a celebration of International Tourist Interest, offers a unique opportunity to find out how the city was founded.Highlighted event:In addition to the Marató Castelló in February, the 21 km Half Marathon held in the Ribalta Park in January is another key event.

Mataró
Why it is an Active Running City:Jogging along the promenade, bordering the harbour, at sunrise or sunset gives you the opportunity to enjoy some stunning panoramic views. The Forest Park is an ideal alternative if you like the mountains. It has a multitude of routes, both wide, well-signposted tracks and narrower, more technical trails through a lush forest of pines and holm oaks.Tourism:Just 30 minutes from Barcelona and one hour from Girona, Mataró has a significant marina, a beautiful beach and is considered the capital of the Maresmeregion. Here you can visit the first work of the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí, the Nau Gaudí, now home to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The modernist Casa Coll i Regàs is another must-visit site in this town, which also has a great legacy from the Roman Empire.Highlighted event:The Xtrail Series Run Mataró is ideal for running through the beautiful landscapes of Maresme and with its two additional routes (one short and one extreme). It is an achievable challenge for almost everyone.

Santa Coloma de Gramenet
Why it is an Active Running City:This town in the metropolitan area of Barcelona has natural spaces such as the Besòs River Park and the Serra de Marina mountain range, which are perfect for strolling or jogging while admiring the Mediterranean flora and fauna.Tourism:Among its streets you will discover old (masías), typical Catalan manor houses and farmhouses, which reveal its agricultural tradition. The Balldovina Tower is the only Romanesque building in the region that has been preserved intact and houses the town museum. Next to it is the Ribé flour mill, which was in operation from the 14th to the 20th century. And some 300 metres above sea level, at Puig Castellar, you can visit the remains of an Iberian settlement.Highlighted event:The Vigia Trail is an exciting event organised by a local athletics club that runs through emblematic spots such as the Sierra de la Marina mountains, the Iberian settlement and the hermitages of Sant Onofre and Sant Climent. In November the Cros Antonio Amorós is held, a very accessible popular race of only five kilometres in distance.
