León (Province)

Castilla y Leon

This is the most extensive province in the whole of the Castile-Leon region, and is located in the interior of the northern part of Spain.

Its natural heritage includes the Picos de Europa National Park, which can be explored by taking the Route of the Cares river. The area of Las Médulas, a landscape of open-air mines, has also been awarded the World Heritage designation by the UNESCO.

The province of León is home to places with a rich cultural heritage such as Ponferrada, Astorga with its Episcopal Palace by Gaudí; as well as the capital, León, with its Cathedral and the Casa Botines building, also designed by Gaudí. It is also part of the Silver Route and the Way of Saint James. Its Easter Week celebrations, with the ceremonial Processions of the Pasos, or religious floats, have been designated of International Tourist Interest. The rich local gastronomy is an added attraction, with specialities including cured meats such as the famous botillo stuffed meat dish from El Bierzo accompanied by wines from the local Designation of Origin.
