Camino de Santiago through O Ribeiro Wine Region

El Camino del Ribeiro Way is part of a long and old pilgrimage route that has been recently resurrected. It starts from Braga in Portugal and goes all the way to Santiago de Compostela (El Camino de Santiago da Geira Romana e dos Arrieiros). The whole Camino is 239 km and it involves some demanding climbing through the Portuguese mountains. Therefore, we think it`s more realistic to begin in Ribadavia and walk the last 109 km from Santiago so pilgrims can still receive their Compostela certificate upon arrival in Santiago. The Camino extends for 40 km through the wine area of O Ribeiro, which has its own Denomination of Origin. We will walk through terraced vineyards and the river valleys of the rivers Minho and Avia. We will stay overnight at the calm and peaceful village of Pazos de Arenteiro, known for the many historic manor-style houses that you can find here. The last 90 km to Santiago follow the old route used back in the day to take the wine produced in the O Ribeiro to Santiago de Compostela`s main market, known as Camino dos Arrieiros. The climb to Salón is one of its toughest walks of this route but right after this, the Camino gets much flatter crossing little towns and rural villages that most tourists don`t visit.
