Why travel to the Canary Islands in winter?

Canary Islands

Here are 7 reasons we think will convince you to start planning a holiday in the Canary Islands. You can enjoy winter moments as unique as a sun-soaked Christmas, or a relaxing New Year’s Day on the beach.

  • Los Volcanes Nature Reserve on Lanzarote

    IT’S SPRING, AS USUAL

A mild climate all year: that’s the eternal promise of the Canary Islands. In winter, average temperatures are around 20 degrees centigrade, and it rarely rains. It’s perfect weather for sightseeing and exploring its beautiful volcanic landscapes.

  • Couple on a boat off Tenerife

    SUNSHINE IS PRACTICALLY GUARANTEED

The Canary Islands enjoy over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. So you can be sure of long, bright days all year. The sun is almost always shining, and is ideal company if you want to enjoy some relaxing days on the beach.

    YOU CAN PACK LIGHT

Even if you’re travelling in December, January or February you won’t need warm scarves or coats. Pick out your coolest outfits and pack light. You could even leave your swimsuit behind and buy a new one in the Canary Islands - the local beachwear fashions are famous.

  • Garajonay National Park, on La Gomera.

    YOU CAN VISIT UNIQUE LANDSCAPES

From wild sub-tropical forests in Garajonay Natural Park on La Gomera, or Los Tilos laurel forest on La Palma, to desert landscapes by the sea in Dunas de Corralejo Nature Reserve on Fuerteventura, or the iconic Maspalomas beach on Gran Canaria. The natural diversity of the Canary Islands includes surprising spaces shaped by their volcanic origins, like Timanfaya National Park, on Lanzarote; Spain’s tallest mountain (Mt Teide, Tenerife, in Teide National Park), and spectacular viewing points - for example, on El Hierro.

  • Mountain biking

YOU CAN PRACTICE YOUR FAVOURITE OUTDOOR SPORTS

Cycling, hiking, windsurf, scuba diving…? The Canary Islands are a top destination for athletes from all over the world, who take advantage of the mild climate to train any time of year. You can do it too. For example, there are plenty of well-marked hiking routes and good roads for cyclists. Best of all? You’ll discover wonderful landscapes while you have fun. On the coast, you can enjoy water sports, especially windsurfing and scuba diving.

  • Courtyard in San Cristobal de La Laguna, Tenerife

    YOU’LL DISCOVER A LITTLE-KNOWN HERITAGE

As well as good weather, volcanic scenery, and wonderful beaches, the Canary Islands offer some very interesting cultural sightseeing. For example, Tenerife has a World Heritage City, San Cristóbal de La Laguna. On the island of Lanzarote, the work of César Manrique blends with the natural environment. Many villages on the islands still boast unspoiled traditional Canarian architecture, and in winter, the famous Carnival takes over.

  • Spa Hotel Abama, Tenerife

YOU CAN DE-STRESS FOR THE NEW YEAR

A holiday in the Canary Islands is pure relaxation. The pace of life on the islands is laid-back, the climate invites you to take things easy, and there are plenty of spas and wellness centres. Gran Canaria and Tenerife have the most, although you can find them on all the Canary Islands, offering treatments like thalassotherapy, vinotherapy, and aloetherapy, using the native aloe vera (a plant known for its skin-healing properties).
