Convent of La Imagen (Discalced Carmelites) in Alcalá de Henares. Comunidad de Madrid

Convent of La Imagen (Carmelitas Descalzas). Alcalá de Henares.

Madrid

It was founded in 1563 by Blessed Sor María de Jesús under the patronage of Leonor de Mascareñas, nursemaid to Felipe II. On the outside of this Renaissance building, the church's façade, thought to be the work of Alonso de Covarrubias, is decorated with grotesque and fantastic figures as well as dragons. The façade's pediment features a niche with an image of the Immaculate Conception, over the coat of arms of the Carmelite order. Inside it houses the staircase and the patio, thought to have been created by Covarrubias.
