A summer discovering the music festivals of the Basque Country

Every year, cultural activities are organised in the Basque Country with music, concerts and celebrations taking centre stage. When summer arrives, many of the region's festivals start to pile up on the calendar. Music festivals that are recognised throughout Spain, with lots of different genres on offer: classical, jazz, pop, rock, indie, underground, and more. Whatever your musical tastes, there’s bound to be a festival for you!

    San Sebastian International Jazz Festival, one of Europe's oldest jazz festivals

    Also known as Jazzaldia, this festival brings together some of the most popular Spanish and international artists from the jazz music scene. It’s held in San Sebastián over several days in July, and there are concerts at different venues all across the city. Some are free of charge, such as those held on Zurriola beach, and on the terraces of the Kursaal Centre.

    San Sebastian Music Fortnight, the oldest festival in Spain

    Since 1939, every August the city of San Sebastián has played host to the Quincena Musical, a festival of classical music that offers a packed programme of activities concerts by well-known musicians. In addition, it also gives visibility to talented new artists.Its venues have welcomed conductors like Münch, Neumann and Sir Colin Davis, and symphony orchestras, such as those of the Basque Country, London, Berlin, and St. Petersburg. They’ve been the setting for performances by ballet companies, such as the Tokyo Ballet and the New York City Ballet, andrenowned soloists, such as Luciano Pavarotti, Montserrat Caballé and Plácido Domingo.

    Bay of Biscay, the new name of the Mundaka Festival

    Imagine being able to enjoy alternative music, pop and rock while tasting typical regional dishes in an unparalleled natural setting in Bizkaia. Well, it’s possible! The Mundaka Festival was an event that combined music with Basque gastronomy, in the incredible Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. The festival now goes by a new name: Bay of Biscay.  The event has always stressed the importance of respecting and caring for the natural world, which is one of the reasons why it’s recognised as the first sustainable festival in the Basque Country.
