Locations in Extremadura for couple getaways

Extremadura

If you are looking forward to a romantic getaway to a quiet destination where you can enjoy nature and culture, Extremadura is the place for you. We suggest several off-the-beaten-track locations for a romantic getaway.

  • Yurt of Casas del Castañar in Caceres, Extremadura

Would you like to sleep in a traditional yurt in the middle of a cherry tree farm?

This is one of the proposals of the "Unique Accommodations of Extremadura". In the middle of the Jerte Valley, in an ecological, 5,200-square metre cherry tree farm, you can find three yurts (circular tents) hand-made and hand-painted by Mongolian artisans, with a private garden. In addition to spending an unforgettable night, you can sign up for activities such as a traditional Thai massage, a private yoga class, stargazing with an expert guide, show cooking with a private chef, quad routes and hiking routes...Another of the unique accommodations in Extremadura can be found in El Torno, also in the Jerte Valley. Here you can stay at three stone huts reminiscent of the constructions found in the local mountains. These accommodations are special because of their huge windows with views of the landscape, and the digital telescopes in each room to see the stars. Getting up to a personalised picnic breakfast and magnificent views of the valley is a great experience.

  • Night view from the Ring of Granadilla in Caceres, Extremadura

A hug under a blanket of stars

Extremadura offers many locations for looking at the sky. This area has one of the starry skies with the least light pollution in Europe. You can check the following website: Extremadura, buenas noches (https://extremadurabuenasnoches.com/). You will find information about the network of celestial viewpoints, night paths that will take you to the caves of Fuentes de León or the "magic mountain", or experiences like guided observations, stories and legends...

  • Tourist in thermal pool of Baños de Montemayor in Caceres, Extremadura

    Relax in a spa town

No sitting in front your partner looking at your mobile. It's time to do something different to connect. And there is no better plan than letting yourself be pampered as a couple in one of the famous spas in Extremadura. There are several to choose from. However, the spas with the most history are Alange and Baños de Montemayor, since both towns were of note during the splendour of Roman culture in Spain. Relax in a Roman bath, rest in a solarium pool or enjoy a wax massage from scented candles.

  • Detail of the Temple of Diana in Merida, Badajoz, Extremadura

Take a moonlit stroll near the Temple of Diana in Merida

When we talk about the ancient Roman Empire in Extremadura, Merida should be on your must-see list. It features one of the most important Roman archaeological sites in Europe. Going into this city and walking next to its theatre, its amphitheatre, the Arch of Trajan, the roman bridge, the roman circus or the Aqueduct of Miracles is like traveling back in time. But there is particularly romantic corner when the night falls: the Roman Temple of Diana. This 1st century BC monument is lit up to create a unique atmosphere. Located in the old town, it is surrounded by restaurants where you can have an unforgettable dinner.

Get carried away by contemporary art

You can do it with two proposals away from the more conventional museums. If you visit the beautiful city of Caceres (declared "Third Monument Ensemble in Europe"), you will walk through its streets and think that you have moved back to medieval times; and you will also be able to see the most innovative proposals at the Helga de Alvear Foundation. You will find the best of contemporary art in an equally surprising building.Another option is to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art in Fregenal de la Sierra, in the historic 16th-century Convent of San Francisco.

  • View of Granadilla in Caceres, Extremadura

    How about a romantic route?

There are countless corners in Extremadura that will seem very romantic to you. For example, Hervás, a town with an extremely well preserved Jewish quarter. Did you know that, according to legend, the Moorish princess Zoraida and the shepherd Arcadio lived a tragic love story in Hervás?Another very special place: the abandoned village of Granadilla. The village was founded by Muslims in the 9th century and was deserted in the mid-20th century when a reservoir was built. Today, it has become a kind of open-air museum in which cultural activities, historical re-enactments and other events are organised. If you visit its castle at sunset, you will fall in love with the views: from this vantage point, you can see the whole village, the reservoir and an impressive sunset. One final idea: the "Route of the Mills", between Arroyomolinos and Montánchez. Hiking together along a path surrounded by mills and to the sound of fountains, small waterfalls... How about organising a picnic here? And you can finish the experience by spending the night in one of the rooms or grinding rooms of a mill converted into a hostel.
