Tarragona

The stage of gladiator fights

Built in the 2nd century AD on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the amphitheatre hosted various popular shows, such as gladiatorial fights. It has the oval floor plan characteristic of this type of construction. Under the arena, the scene of the shows, there are pits that served as auxiliary services. In the central part of the amphitheatre are the remains of the foundation of a 6th-century Visigothic basilica and those of a 12th-century Romanesque-Gothic church. The amphitheatre is part of the monumental ensemble of Tarraco, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
