Built in the 15th century and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument of National Interest in 1931, the former Santa Creu hospital is one of the most characteristic Gothic buildings in the city.
The building was built during the 15th century and was directed by the master builder Guillem Abiell. It is in the Gothic style. Of the four wings that surrounded the porticoed courtyard, only three remain today, since in the 16th century another porticoed courtyard was built attached to the first. Within the building complex there is a small church with a nave, barrel vault and two attached chapels. Today, the group of buildings that make up the old hospital houses various institutions in the city, such as the National Library of Catalonia, the Institute of Catalan Studies and the Sant Pau-Santa Creu public library.
