Monastery of San Salvador de Lérez
Located very close to the city of Pontevedra, this old Benedictine monastery, whose existence has been recorded since the 9th century, contains various interesting neoclassical and Baroque elements.
The monastery church dates from the 18th century and is neoclassical in its design, with a single nave and semicircular arches and vaults. The façade dates from 1748 and is typical of the late Baroque style. It is flanked by two towers. Highlights on the interior include the chapel of San Benito (1700), home to a Romanesque image of the Saviour. Adjoining the church is one of the galleries of the old 16th century Renaissance cloister. Various rooms and areas from the old monastery still survive to the present day. Every 11 July the monastery is the site of the traditional popular pilgrimage of San Benito, which marks the start of the summer programme of festivities in the city of Pontevedra.
