After its restoration, the old slaughterhouse and livestock market of Madrid was transformed into a large multidisciplinary space, dedicated to artistic experimentation and production.
The Matadero Madrid Contemporary Creation Centre is found in one of the industrial pavilions built between 1908 and 1928, designed by Luis Bellido for the Madrid livestock market of the era. These buildings form one of the most interesting architectural complexes in the city. Today, this industrial heritage has been recovered and turned into a centre for cultural dissemination, research and creation, with different activities that promote citizen participation. Each pavilion offers a programme and services related to a specific cultural field: for example, performing arts in Nave 10; design in the Central de Diseño; independent and documentary films in the Cineteca, and literature in the Casa del Lector. It also has a 4,000 m2 immersive exhibition centre (Nave 16), a centre for artists in residence, a dance centre, and a large outdoor space (Calle Matadero and Plaza Matadero), where concerts and shows of all kinds are held.
