Alicante-Alacant

Santa Pola Salt Lakes

The Santa Pola salt flats are located in the province of Alicante. Two zones can be distinguished: salt extraction in one area, and marshland, dunes, and cultivated land in the other.

The fauna and flora of Las Salinas de Santa Pola Natural Park has adapted to the humidity and high salinity of the area. In this regard, it is worth noting the large number of flamingos found there.

Useful information

What you need to know

  • Cultural information

The nature reserve can be found on the coast of Alicante near the town of Santa Pola, which is known for its rich monumental and artistic heritage. The city of Alicante is just a few kilometres away and is one of the most important cities on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Another nearby cultural enclave of great value is the town of Elche.

  • Environmental information

The flora is varied, in keeping with the different ecosystems of the park, for example with various types of reed in the coastal dunes or the endemic Santa Pola limonium in the salt steppes. As for the fauna, the salt flats have been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) and there are some outstanding species such as the red-crested pochard.

  • Information for visits

The park's visitor centre, located in an old salt factory in the urban area of Santa Pola, is only 2 km from the centre, but also on the edge of the salt flats. It also serves as a salt museum, which explains the process of salt production and its history.
