It commemorates two major events: the founding of the city of Murcia in 825 by Abderraman II and the handing over of the keys by the Muslims to the Infante of Castile, later King Alfonso X the Wise in 1243.
Most of the events take place at the Medieval Camp, which is located in the San Esteban garden and serves as a meeting place where people can enjoy the festive atmosphere and sample local produce. The grand parade is held on Saturday, in which the groups that make up the Moorish and Christian sides parade through the city's neighbourhoods. The Embassy Play (a performance originating from the popular theatre of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) of the Murcia Foundation is held on Sunday at the Plaza del Cardenal Belluga with the current Cathedral and the old mosque in the background. The Embassy Play with the handing over of the keys is held on Monday, staging the triumphal entry of Prince Alfonso of Castile into Murcia, where he later received the keys to the city.
