La Luz castle – Fundación de Arte y Pensamiento Martín Chirino

Gran Canaria

This is the location of the foundation dedicated to the Canary Islands sculptor Martín Chirino, and contains 25 of his works.

It was built as the result of the fight against piracy, and is considered the oldest fortress on the island. It was originally built on the shores of the sea, however due to the fact that the land has been artificially reclaimed, it now stands a little inland. It is located in the north of the island beside the port, and was used as a defence during the 16th century to protect the city against attack by English and Dutch pirates, hence its former name: the Fortress of La Luz.The building now houses a museum specialising in conservation, research, documentation, and dissemination of the history of the Canary Islands. The Martín Chirino Foundation is also a centre for debate, exhibitions, education and documentation relating to the Canarian artist Martín Chirino.
