Shrine of San Antonio de la Florida

Madrid

The hermitage was commissioned by Charles IV to the Italian architect Filippo Fontana in 1792. The sculpture of San Antonio was made by José Ginés. The decoration was carried out by Francisco de Goya, who painted the frescoes that narrate the theme of the saint's life. The hermitage has a Greek cross plan, with a central dome in which its lantern stands out. The façade has a single body, decorated with two Doric pilasters. In 1905 it was declared a National Monument, and in 1928 an identical chapel was built next to it in order to move the worship service and preserve the original as a Goya museum, as the artist's remains have been resting there since 1919. The chapel is part of the Historical Ensemble of the Royal Palace of Madrid managed by National Heritage.
