Cocheras del Rey Carriage Museum

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is home to a large collection of carriages used by the Spanish Royal Household dating from between the 18th and 19th centuries, in addition to other associated items.

The Cocheras del Rey is the name given to a series of 18th-century buildings that were at the service of the Royal Household to cover their transport needs when they lived in El Escorial in the autumn months. The collection on view to visitors is in the building called the Casa de los Oficios del Viaje, and traces the history and operation of the carriages and coaches between 1771 and 1870. Highlights include the vehicles themselves (horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, carts…), harnesses, uniforms, post houses items, packaging, luggage, hunting equipment and much more.
