Church and tower of San Pedro Apóstol

Alagón

Zaragoza

The narrow tower of the Church of San Pedro Apóstol of Alagón stands out like a golden needle in the western sun against the flat horizons of the fertile river banks of the Ebro.

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is one of the typical Gothic-Mudejar churches that are so numerous in some parts of Aragon, which has a long tradition of Moorish influence. It has a single nave in two sections, with a semicircular apse (polygonal on the outside) roofed over with simple cross vaults. In later centuries other elements came to be added that have enlarged it substantially. The bell tower was built over the old minaret of the Arab mosque, possibly in the 11th century, in the classic Almohad minaret style. It is on an octagonal floor plan and in three sections. The second is truly beautiful, with a delicate typically Mudejar decoration of corner friezes, zig-zag patterns, rhombuses and crossed arches.
