Visitor Centre of the Bustiello Mining Town
Mieres
Life in the Asturian mining valleys
The town of Bustiello is an exception within the Asturian industrial heritage: A complex built between 1890 and 1925 by the Sociedad Hullera Española, a major mining company belonging to the industrial group of the Marquis of Comillas. A church, a monument, a casino or workers' centre, a school, a hospital ... and accommodation for engineers and workers, which reflect a careful overall plan and unusual attention to aesthetic details. To discover it and understand the keys to the “industrial paternalism” that it embodies, the tour must begin at the Interpretation Centre, located in one of the old renovated chalets (Don Isidro's house). The centre displays different materials that address the geological and industrial importance of the mining basin, as well as the business network of the Marquis of Comillas. The second floor towers over this unique town, a company town designed like a garden city, representing and explaining its characteristics from a historical, artistic and heritage point of view.A guided tour is the best option to discover the keys to this rich industrial past.
