New Year's Eve at Puerta del Sol

Special events
Madrid

Every December 31st, as a prelude to a long night of celebration, thousands of people gather at the Puerta del Sol in Madrid to welcome the new year by eating the traditional 12 lucky grapes to the sound of the chimes of the clock.

In the midst of a festive atmosphere, the wait culminates at midnight sharp, when the chimes of the clock at Puerta del Sol signal the moment to comply with custom at New Year's Eve: Say goodbye to the year by eating the 12 grapes in time for 12 months of prosperity in the coming year. It is an event that many families also “attend” from their homes via television. In order to enjoy this moment live, it is necessary to arrive at the square several hours in advance as the capacity is limited to 15,000 people. Many people also congregate on 30 December, during the rehearsal that takes place the day before, to celebrate the so-called “Preuvas”.
