The peak moment of Easter Week in Sagunto takes place on Good Friday with the Way of the Cross from the chapel of La Sangre to El Calvario.

All along this steep path, the Passion of Christ is re-enacted in a massive event during which the sound of drums, prayers and hymns known as “motets” never ceases. On the afternoon of the same day, the multitudinous Holy Burial procession in an atmosphere of religious fervour. During the procession, children ask the participants for sweets (“caramelets”), while some lay brothers, known as “plegaors”, request donations, accompanied by the sound of drums and cornets. Easter also features the Sagunto Passion Play, which is a dramatisation of the passion and death of Christ by a group of amateur actors.

Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. Its history and tradition go back many centuries, and commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Most of the cities, towns and villages of Spain are transformed into scenes of religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation as the faithful contemplate the Passion, with music, art and colour creating a magical atmosphere in solemn processions in which throngs of people accompany the religious images.
