Since the 15th century, Palencia's Easter rituals have been characterised by faith, silence and religious fervour.

During its sober and austere processions, religious images and sculptures hundreds of years old are carried through the streets. On the nights of Tuesday and Wednesday, the very traditional “llamada de los hermanos” (call of the brothers) takes place: people call on their neighbours to participate in the processions by playing cornets and knocking on their doors. The sound of the “tararú” is typical of Easter week in Palencia and accompanies the processions: the stops and starts of the procession are marked by a cornet fanfare and a children’s choir – a real spectacle. The Rompimiento del Velo procession is the final act in this city’s Easter celebrations. Rockets fly, bells peal, and bread rolls, almonds and lemonade are handed out to announce the Resurrection of Christ.

Easter week is one of the most heartfelt and deep-rooted fiestas celebrated in Spain. Its history and tradition go back many centuries, and commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ. The streets of many of Spain's cities, towns and villages are transformed into scenes of religious fervour and devotion, where grief and meditation are combined as Christ's death is relived. Music, art and colour come together in these magical processions –solemn parades in which throngs of people accompany the religious images on their route through the streets.
