Every February this festival on the island of Gran Canaria brings together thousands of people who want to witness this incredible natural spectacle. The white blossom fills the landscapes heralding the arrival of spring. The celebration is a combination of artisan and folkloric associations.
It was the first pagan festival to be held on the island of Gran Canaria and unlike all the other celebrations in the archipelago (except for Carnival), the Almond Blossom Festival takes place in spring. The festivities start with the opening address and the presentation of the Silver Almond Award The Saturday is known as “Tourist Day”, when all visitors are invited to come and explore the municipality, shop for local arts and crafts and marvel at the beauty of the almond blossom. The Sunday of the event is known as “Domingo de la Fiesta”, or "Festival Sunday". From the early hours of the morning, the town is filled with stalls selling local artisan and gastronomic products to the delight of visitors and locals alike. Papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes), fried sardines, and frangollo (a Canarian dessert) are just a few examples of the local specialities you can try. The main streets of Tejeda are brought to life by groups playing traditional Canary island music.
