Sa Bassa Blanca Museum

Mallorca

Art, architecture and nature complement each other to offer, through the different spaces of this 16-hectare estate, a unique collection of contemporary art less than 7 kilometres from the town of Alcúdia.

The main building is a work of art in itself: a modern Hispano-Moorish mansion, designed by the Egyptian Hassan Fathy. It exhibits collections of contemporary African art, half a hundred photographs of leading artists, illustrations, Asian sculptures, and much more, even a 15th century Mudéjar coffered ceiling. In addition, two very peculiar underground spaces surprise the visitor. On the one hand, the Nins room, in the old cistern, brings together 150 valuable portraits of children from the 16th to 19th centuries. On the other, the Sokrates room reflects on time through many prisms, with more contemporary works, a skeleton of a prehistoric woolly rhinoceros and a curtain of Swarovski crystals. In the gardens, you can stroll around a very special sculpture zoo and the OlivArt, a garden of ancient olive trees. Visits must be arranged previously. You can also go up to Observatory/Camera Obscura, which is a 15-minute walk away.
