Ruins of the Roman city of Julióbriga
Campoo de Enmedio

Instruments of the Roman presence
Julióbriga means "fortified city of Julius".
After the Cantabrian Wars, the Roman Emperor Augustus founded a tributary city. Their aim was to romanise the newly conquered peoples in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Julióbriga was built on the remains of an old 1st century B.C. fort. The name was in honour of Augustus' adoptive father, the Emperor Julius Caesar.
