Naval Museum of San Fernando, Cádiz

San Fernando Naval Museum

Cádiz

Dedicated to the military and civilian heritage of the oceans

Founded in 1992 as a branch of the Naval Museum of Madrid, it moved in 2016 to its current headquarters, the building of the former Captaincy General of the Navy of San Fernando.

Its collections come mainly from Cadiz, the Naval Museum of Madrid and private collections. It is organised on two floors and there are two main exhibition themes, one chronological and the other monographic. The first one tells the history of the maritime department of Cadiz, showing, for example, the important naval construction work carried out to create a Navy appropriate to its time, the naval battles of the 19th century or its evolution and technological development in the 20th century. The second shows the work and daily life in the Spanish Navy, exhibiting part of the museum's most outstanding collections. Some of the theme-based rooms are dedicated to the Marine Corps, Naval Artillery and Naval Medicine. You can also see items used to train marines and which were used in the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. The exhibition reviews the historical naval events linked to the Bay of Cadiz, such as the Race for the Indies, the Lepanto galley fleet and the major scientific expeditions of the 18th century.
