Museum of the Encarnación Monastery

Ávila

The habits of an extraordinary woman

Through evocations of Teresa of Ávila, this visit takes place in a magnificent ensemble of Renaissance buildings, restored in the 18th century.

More than a museum, it is a journey into the memories of Teresa of Ávila. She took her vows (1537) in this convent, and lived here for 27 years. Saint John of the Cross also spent a period of time here as chaplain and confessor. Saint John of the Cross' confessional box can still be seen, cut into the wall, as can the private cell of Santa Teresa, in the Chapel of the Transverberation.
