The discoverer of the Americas

This is one of the most iconic monuments in the city. The 52 metre tall column, designed by Gaietà Buïgas for the Universal Exposition of 1888, is topped with the statue of Christopher Columbus, the work of Rafael Arché and measuring 7 metres in height. A lift takes visitors up through the interior of the column to a vantage point from where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city. The statue is pointing with its index finger in the direction of the Americas.
