Garcimuñoz Castle
Castillo de Garcimuñoz
This historical building in the province of Cuenca stands out for being a castle built on top of another castle. The castle where Don Juan Manuel lived from 1312, and the castle built by order of the Marquis of Villena Don Juan Pacheco in 1458, in Elizabethan Gothic style.
Garcimuñoz Castle overlooks the town that took its name. The castle of Don Juan Pacheco was built under the oversight of Martín Sánchez Bonifacio, one of the members of the Toledo school. In the 18th century, the church of San Juan Bautista was built inside. The castle has been restored (between 2010 and 2016) by the architect Izaskun Chinchilla in a postmodern style that links sculpture with architecture. His work has made it possible to trace routes to improve the visitor's experience. The parade ground is of particular notice: colour and the sculptural structures inspired by nature create a magical forest that invites reflection and creativity.
