El Médol Roman Quarry

Tarragona

It is a large pit more than 200 metres long from which stone was quarried in Roman times. In the centre of the quarry there is an unexcavated stone spire known as the agulla del Mèdol (needle of Medól). A large number of the most important buildings in Tarraco were built with the stone from this quarry. It is part of the monumental ensemble of Tarraco, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
