Asón-Agüera: nature of contrasts in Cantabria

Cantabria

If you travel to the coastal area of Cantabria between Castro Urdiales and Laredo or to the inland eastern valleys of Asón, Soba and Ruesga, you will be in the region known as Asón-Agüera. This is an ideal rural area if you are looking for disconnection or even active tourism. Contact with nature is guaranteed, since you will find wonderful beaches, the best preserved oak forests in Cantabria and some of the longest caves in Europe. In total, there are 19 municipalities in this area. Discover some of its charms and why this is one of the most photogenic places in northern Spain.

A good day at the beach

Enjoying a few wonderful days on the coast is very easy here, since it is an area with all kinds of hotels and long lovely promenades, especially on weekends. The largest beaches are in the cities. For example, Brazomar beach, in Castro Urdiales, which has the charm of a seafaring town with a stately tradition. Stroll through the alleys of its medieval centre with wooden balconies, and don't forget to visit its Church of Santa María, from the 13th century.Another example: Salvé beach, in Laredo, a beautiful coastal town where you can stroll through Puebla Vieja (which still preserves remains of its old walls) or stop at its fishing and marina ports. Did you know that many illustrious characters have come through here? The most famous, Emperor Carlos V. There is a depiction of his last landing here.  More beaches to enjoy: San Julián and Sonabia, in Liendo.

Find peace within a valley

If you travel inland, you will find peace for rural tourism and incredible landscapes made up of valleys, limestone mountains, caves and rivers. One of this area's biggest attractions is everything that has to do with its geological history. In addition to having countless caves that attract speleologists from all over the world, its relief gives rise to natural spectacles such as the waterfall at the source of the river Asón, over 70 metres and in the shape of a horse's tail. There are several routes and viewpoints so you can enjoy it up close.

Another impressive option is the Reina viewpoint, from where you can see the Gandara waterfalls. And if you're looking to find out more about the area in general, don't miss the Collados del Asón Natural Park visitor centre, in La Gandara (Soba). If you would rather enter a cave, there are two very special ones where you can see perfectly preserved cave paintings of Paleolithic art: Covalanas and Cullalvera. Lovers of active tourism can enter caves such as those on the Cueto-Coventosa crossing, go caving or climb impressive vertical walls of limestone rock, as there are several via ferrata.

Time for culture

Many of the towns in this part of Cantabria, like Ampuero, Arredondo and Ramales de la Victoria, preserve the memory of past times and it is a pleasure to walk through them. You can find, for example, the curious casas de indianos: mansions or very showy palaces of colonial style.Or you can visit the shrines such as La Bien Aparecida (in Ampuero) or the Parish Church of San Pedro de Limpias. And the visitor centres and museums of the Asón-Agüera region are another way of discovering the area and exploring the vestiges of the past. A few examples: The Rasines Stonecutting Museum, the Villaverde Valley Ethnography visitor centre, the Soba Ethnographic Museum or the Arredondo Ichthyological Centre. You should also visit the Yseca Ironworks, in Guriezo, an example of industrial heritage.
