Portbou

Immersed in the rugged landscape of Costa Brava, Portbou is a town with a long seafaring tradition, which offers an attractive natural setting, as well as numerous leisure possibilities along its coast.

Portbou is located to the north of the region of Alt Empordà, Girona, in the border with France. This peculiar location turned this town into one of the main points of access into Spain in the late 19th century, as well as an important transport junction. It is precisely its railway station, built in 1929, one of the most important buildings in town. A traditional fishing port, Portbou sits on a sunny coastal valley, in Costa Brava. Its historic quarter, dominated by the Neo-Gothic church of Santa María, is surrounded by coastal hills and steep slopes covered with thick vegetation, followed by tranquil, secluded beaches and coves, such as Rates, Cala del Pi, Les Fresses, Claper Beach, and Gran Beach, one of the best in the area. A coast washed by crystal waters, with a splendid seabed for scuba diving and swimming. In addition, the port has excellent facilities geared to a wide variety of water sports, such as sailing and canoeing.
