The walled enclosure presides over the old town of this cosmopolitan Mediterranean city.Since ancient times, the strategic location of Ceuta has attracted different civilizations. Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, and later Arabs and Portuguese occupied the city for commercial or military purposes; it eventually chose to become a part of Spain.
