Every year art, tradition and faith take over Plasencia between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday. The inhabitants of this town in the province of Cáceres (Extremadura) take part in solemn processions through the streets of its medieval old quarter.
This event has been held continuously for more than eight centuries. In fact, one of its brotherhoods, La Hermandad de la Santa Vera Cruz, is one of the oldest in Spain. Among the most monumental floats are the Descent from the Cross, which weighs one tonne, and the majestic Holy Supper, with Jesus Christ and the twelve apostles seated at the table, which requires more than 60 porters to move it.You can enjoy a rich gastronomy, typical of the season, around the religious celebration. Potaje de vigilia (chickpea, spinach and cod stew), moje de peces escabechados (fish accompanied by minced vegetables), torrijas and other local sweets such as repápalos or fried potato dumplings, among others. The cobbled streets of Plasencia are home to its distinctive double cathedral, palatial houses, several convents and a dozen churches, such as the former Convent of Santo Domingo. There you can visit the permanent exhibition of the floats that take part in the processions.
