Exhibition: Antoni Tàpies. The Practice of Art

Barcelona artist Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the twentieth century, as well as one of the international benchmarks of informalism, an abstract painting style based on spontaneity. To celebrate one hundred years of existence, the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid will be exhibiting 220 of the artist's pieces from museums and collections around the world.

As an investigator of the limits and contradictions of painting, Tàpies was initially linked to the Catalan avant-garde group Dau al Set. In the early 1950s, the artist began a long period of experimentation with raw materials, such as marble dust or cement. Throughout his almost seven decades of artistic activity, he evolved by using different elements, such as varnish, or incorporating distant influences, such as Eastern spirituality.The exhibition aims to pay tribute to his work and his influences on the cultural history of recent decades. It is the result of the collaboration between the Reina Sofía Museum and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies of Barcelona. From mid-July, the retrospective exhibition of the Catalan artist's career will move to the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
