La Borriquilla Procession on Palm Sunday during Easter Week in Logroño (La Rioja)

Easter Week in Logroño

Festivity of National Tourist Interest
La Rioja

To the sound of trumpets and coinciding with the dawn of spring, Logroño dresses up to celebrate Easter - one of the most traditional festivals in the capital of the Rioja region.

One of the most notable processions representing the passion and death of Christ is “La Borriquilla”, celebrated on Palm Sunday. During what is known by the locals as the Semana Mayor (Holy Week), twelve cofradías (church clubs) show off their cultural heritage in the form of “pasos” (floats with religious scenes and sculptures) through the city streets. The festival reaches its high point on the following Sunday when the Procession of the Risen Christ takes place, crossing the stone bridge over the River Ebro and coming to an end in the town centre.
