Ávila Mediaeval Festival

Festivity of National Tourist Interest
Ávila

The old quarter of Ávila with its famous walls, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, plays host to the Mediaeval Festival (or “Market of the Three Cultures”) every first weekend in September, offering a real journey into the past.

A large market with more than 250 stalls selling crafts and food, spread throughout the streets and squares of the historic centre, brings together local and international craftspeople, musicians and minstrels, falconers, archers, and knights who fight on foot and on horseback in tournaments. Balconies and shop windows are decorated, while theatre and street entertainment complete the setting.During these days, both locals and visitors—more than 65,000 people each year—join in the celebration. You can also explore medieval encampments, attend weapons and combat demonstrations, or watch falconry displays. The grand performance and parade put the finishing touch to this festival. And, of course, in the background, the great city wall, decorated in the style of the recreated era along its 2.5-kilometre perimeter, which includes 88 towers.Dubbed the “Market of the Three Cultures”, its aim is to recall the peaceful coexistence in Ávila of Christians, Muslims and Jews. The city's residents are encouraged to mark the occasion by dressing in the mediaeval style and depicting the culture of their choice.
