Madrid in three days

This is a quick guide to Madrid’s must-see spots when you have just a few days. We suggest some visits and experiences you should not miss on your holiday, but above all, we advise you to spend as long as you can in the city. This is the only way to enjoy all the culture, entertainment, leisure and life of one of Europe’s liveliest capitals.

Day 3

We suggest a day shopping in the centre of Madrid, with some other easy-going plans to enjoy the city at your leisure. Remember there is still a lot to see: important museums, theme parks, elegant gardens…

Shopping in the Salamanca district or the Golden Mile

This is the most prestigious place to shop in Madrid. Calle Serrano, Calle Velázquez, Calle Ortega y Gasset, Calle Jorge Juan and Calle Núñez de Balboa are full of luxury fashion boutiques, famous designer showrooms, exclusive jewellers, international brands, and everything you can imagine for a day’s shopping.

It’s also a pleasant area to walk around, with many restaurants and food shops, quiet terraces, interesting art galleries, and parks such as the Jardines del Descubrimiento, next to Plaza de Colón. Very close by are two important buildings that are worth a visit: the Spanish National Library and the National Archaeological Museum.

Buen Retiro Park

One of the largest city parks in Europe, it is the green “lung” of the city. You can walk there from the Salamanca district, passing by Puerta de Alcalá, one of Madrid’s iconic monuments. The park has plenty to offer for every taste. It’s the perfect area for a quiet walk, but it’s also great for children. They love it, because there is usually some form of entertainment for them, and there is a boating pond.

Many people play sports or run in the ample spaces, and others simply relax, sitting on the many benches or lying on the grass to soak up the sun. As you walk around, you’ll find several open spaces with sculptures, and some interesting buildings such as the Crystal Palace or the Velázquez Palace. Next to the north-west entrance is the Casa Árabe cultural centre, which has a well-known restaurant and organises many cultural activities. By the south-west entrance, Cuesta de Moyano is a famous pedestrianised street and the home of Madrid’s book market.

Madrid City Tour

One of the easiest and simplest ways to explore the city. This is a tourist bus with an audio guide, available in 14 languages, offering two tours of Madrid’s main streets, sights and places of interest. Tickets let you get on and off the bus as often as you want on the day (or two days) they cover. The bus is recommended for longer distances or to keep sightseeing even when you’re tired.

Madrid Río

A modern park alongside Madrid’s river, the Manzanares. We recommend visiting the area closest to the Príncipe Pío metro stop. On one side you’ll see the Royal Palace and the Cathedral of La Almudena. On the other, the enormous park of Casa de Campo. Madrid Río is perfect for relaxing, taking a bike ride, letting your kids run around and play in playgrounds, or enjoy a snack while you admire the view. It’s also very near other interesting areas, such as the district of La Latina or Madrid de los Austrias. If you like football, look out for the home ground stadium of Atlético de Madrid, the Vicente Calderón.

A trip to Madrid ought to include a meal in one of its best restaurants. According to the experts, there are plenty to choose from. In 2016 the city boasts 20 Michelin stars. “DiverXo”, the restaurant of chef Dabiz Muñoz, has three. Santceloni (Hotel Hesperia), La Terraza del Casino, Club Allard and Ramón Freixa Madrid have two each. And seven more have a single Michelin star: Kabuki Wellington, Kabuki, DSTAgE Concept, Álbora, Punto MX, La Cabra and Lúa.
