Pozo Julia Mine
Fabero
Pioneer in the mechanisation of mining in Spain
This 275-metre deep former coal mine located in Fabero, León, has been transformed into an attractive museum space that highlights the industrial heritage of the region of El Bierzo.
Built in the mid-20th century, Pozo Julia was the place where modern machinery was first introduced in Spain, leading to a significant technological advance in the mining industry.Through a guided tour lasting just over an hour, you can experience what it was for a miner to work there at the time, learning about one of the hardest and most dangerous jobs in the mine, drillers (responsible for extracting coal by drilling the walls). You will also visit the mine's main buildings, such as the lamp room, where miner's collected their lamps for the long day's work in the dark galleries, or the “headgear”, a system of pulleys used to extract the coal and transport the miners into the mine.
