Cueva del Agua cave

Iznalloz

Granada

A laboratory in the centre of the earth

A natural wonder located at a height of 1,730 metres above the sea, which has contributed valuable scientific findings to the knowledge of the underground world.

This exceptional cavity has evolved into a colossal network of underground passages, and is the site where anti-stalagmites or stalagmitic tubes were first discovered in Spain. It is also home to spectacular rock formations, featuring a predominance of large stalagmite groups, in addition to sheets of rock covered in beautiful coral-like crystallizations, and small lakes of crystal-clear waters. In the early 1990s an important research laboratory was set up inside the cave in order to study more closely aspects such as subterranean fauna and physical environmental variables.
