Serra de Montsant Natural Park

A space that combines a rich natural and cultural heritage, with numerous hermitages
Located in the province of Tarragona, within the region of El Priorat, it is characterised by its abrupt orography of cliffs, ravines and gorges, apparently inaccessible.
Montsant is presented as an “island of biodiversity”, surrounded by 11 towns in the region of El Priorat. Its highest mountains are found in the Sierra Major: The highest point is Roca Corbatera (1,163 m), followed by Piló dels Senyalets (1,109 m) and Cogulla (1,063 m).For centuries, Montsant has been a haven of spirituality, as evidenced by the numerous hermitages that can be found. An example is the 12th-century hermitage of San Bartomeu, located in the spectacular Fraguerau gorge. Also located within the boundaries of the natural park are the remains of the Scala Dei Charterhouse, the first to be founded on the Iberian Peninsula.Another of its distinguishing features is the richness of its flora and emblematic fauna. The Serra de Montsant has two of the four trees in Priorat that have been declared monumental: The Yew of the Cave and the Elder of Fontalba. It's also an ideal place to enjoy active tourism activities such as hiking, climbing and via ferrata.AccreditationsIn 2019, the Montsant Natural Park was the first area in Catalonia to receive dual certification for the protection of lighting and acoustic quality from the Generalitat (Catalan Government). In 2021, the Montsant Natural Park and the municipalities in its area of influence were designated a “Starlight Tourist Destination.”
