The tradition is over 200 years old and is passed on from generation to generation (because the human towers have adults and children too, at the top), and the UNESCO has valued the group effort and human creativity. The "castells" usually rise up in a square in front of the main balcony of the town hall to celebrate festivities and it is common for the audience to gather round the base to live this exciting spectacle to the full.

The "castells" (human castles) have been awarded the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity designation. They are a very popular and spectacular event, typical of Catalan culture, in which impressive human towers that are six to ten storeys high rise up and seem to touch the sky.
