San Bartolomé

San Bartolomé, situated at the geographic centre of Lanzarote, is a picturesque town which has remained faithful to its agricultural roots.

Casa Ajei, now an arts centre, and Casa del Mayor Guerra, declared to be of Cultural Interest, are two outstanding examples of this town's architectural heritage. Also in the district, a monumental sculpture by the artist César Manrique pays tribute to the farmers of Lanzarote, very near the Farmers' House. This replica of a popular residence contains a handicrafts centre and a restaurant where you can try the islands' traditional cuisine. But if there is one thing which defines this area it is its diversity of landscapes. To the north is the fertile jable territory, where vegetables and garden produce are grown. In the south is the place known as La Geria, sprinkled with small country houses and famous for its unusual vineyards. The stock is grown in large holes dug into the earth and which are in turn protected from the wind by small semicircular stone walls. As you tour, you can visit wine cellars open to the public with the volcanoes of the Timanfaya National Park as the backdrop. The coastal strip of the district has beaches such as Playa Honda, one of the biggest on the island.
