Drummers in the street

Tamborada drum festival and Easter Week in Hellín

Festivity of International Tourist Interest
Albacete

The highlight of Easter Week in Hellín, Albacete, is the Tamborada. This is the town's most important festival, when the sound of up to 20,000 drums fills the streets, creating a thundrous roar that lasts for several days.

At midnight on Maundy Thursday, the most important tamborada of these festivities takes place. In stark contrast to this tremendous hum of drums, on Good Friday night the procession of the Holy Burial takes place, marked by silence and solemn reflection. This parade includes the carved image of the Recumbent Christ, by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, considered a masterpiece of 20th-century sculpture. A final tamborada, from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon, puts an end to Easter Week in Hellín, after a massive release of doves.

Holy Week is one of Spain’s most profound and deeply rooted celebrations. With centuries of history and tradition, it commemorates the Passion and death of Jesus Christ. Most of the cities, towns and villages of Spain are transformed into scenes of religious fervour and devotion, combining grief and meditation as the faithful contemplate the Passion, with music, art and colour creating a magical atmosphere in solemn processions in which throngs of people accompany the religious images.
