Montilla Grape Harvest Festival
In early September, the Andalusian town of Montilla in Córdoba celebrates its Grape Harvest Festival.
This celebration kicks off with the treading of the grapes harvested from the vineyards surrounding the town, which are used to make its fortified wines. The ‘first pressing’ is extracted and offered to the Virgen de las Viñas (Virgin of the Vineyards). In addition to this traditional grape-treading event, the festivities also feature a range of competitions related to winemaking.Over the four days of the festival, the programme includes the Cata Flamenca (wine tasting featuring performances by flamenco artists); the Tapas Festival; the Wine Festival; an equestrian display; a contest where participants show their skill with historical winemaking tools and various shows centred around music.
