Feast of the Holy Martyrs of Valdecuna

Festivity of Tourist Interest

Mieres

Asturias

The town of Mieres (Asturias) celebrates this folk and religious tradition in honour of Saint Cosme and Saint Damian.

Hundreds of pilgrims attend the celebration, which consists of arriving at the San Cosme y San Damián Shrine on foot to ask them for good health. After the High Mass at 12 noon, the “Puya del Ramu” (“bid for the branch”) takes place when the local bread, known as “escanada” is auctioned.

The next part of the celebration is the “Dancing Competition” in which the prize goes to the couple who shows the most talent in their performance of the regional dance to the beat of bagpipes and a drum. The day is completed with picnics on the fields next to the shrine and the “Toná” (an Asturian song) and folk music in the afternoon.
