Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 2013

Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Festivity of International Tourist Interest
Gran Canaria

This is one of the oldest and most traditional festivals in the Canary Islands and all locals and visitors come together to enjoy the celebrations.

During Carnival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, all the streets fill with an explosion of joy, music and colour. During these days of celebration the Carnival Queen Gala is held to select the festival’s main representative from the hundreds of attendees dressed in striking costumes covered with feathers and rhinestones. At the same time, throughout the city there are costume parades, troupes performing music and dances, murgas –groups of friends singing humorous songs– and floats parading at all hours. The Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been celebrated in the islands since the 16th century, specifically 1574 when a mask and costume ball was organised. This event marked a before and after in this island's history and has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
