Historical and Artistic Tour of Santiago de Compostela
Discover Santiago de Compostela beyond its monuments with a cultural tour that reveals the city’s history, symbols, and hidden details. This guided visit invites you to explore Santiago with a more attentive eye, uncovering elements that often go unnoticed even by locals. The tour begins in the Alameda of Santiago, the city’s great 19th‑century historical park, where you will learn how this leisure space was created and how it evolved with the arrival of modernity. From there, we enter the medieval historic quarter, a network of streets and houses from different periods that still preserve clues about their former inhabitants. As we walk along Rúa do Vilar, one of Santiago’s most emblematic streets, you will discover curiosities such as the “ceiling peepholes” and learn to identify coats of arms, inscriptions, and stone symbols that reveal the influence of the Cathedral Chapter, the University, and the monasteries on urban life.At the south façade of Platerías, a unique jewel of Romanesque art, we will explore its complex sculptural program, transformed over the centuries into a fascinating historical puzzle. The route continues to the Pazo de Fonseca, birthplace of the University of Santiago, where we will visit its cloister and, if available, some of its temporary exhibitions. We finish at the Plaza del Obradoiro, surrounded by the four essential buildings for understanding the city’s history: the Baroque Cathedral, the Neoclassical City Hall, the Royal Hospital of the Catholic Monarchs, and the University Rectorate with its magnificent Romanesque portal. From there, we also view San Martín Pinario, key to understanding the 19th‑century disentailment and the transformation of monastic heritage. An ideal tour for those who want to experience Santiago de Compostela through its history, architecture, and symbols, discovering the city’s most authentic essence.
